Carmen Maricela's Story
Life
Living here in St. George, Utah is very different from Los Angeles. Although, I really miss my friends and family, I have made new friends and St. George is a very charming place to live. I'm very happy to have experience living here. St. George has really grown since we moved in 2004. Real estate was very affortable. You use to be able to buy a new home for less then 150,000 but not anymore. Real estate is outrageous and expensive. The salary is impossible to survive on.
The reason why the real estate market greatly improved St. George was due to relocators from California, Arizona, Nevada, and East coast states. Therefore, the Mormon's (who run the state), have taken advantage of this and now it's become much more difficult to move forward and invest. The wages are extremely low and therefore you can't upgrade.
Having a degree doesn't make a difference because you'll get paid what the Mormon's feel your worth, especially if your non-white and non-mormon. There are only male attorneys and male judges. The women are hired in the secretarial field or retail jobs, but recently female doctor's have finally relocated to St. George. Mormon's marry right after high school and have children at a very young age. Their religion belief is to have large familys as large as 6 to 8 children. The LDS church helps them financially.
Being a non-mormon, it is extremely difficult to make it here. Utah is a right to work state. They give no breaks or lunch even if you work an 8 hr shift. There are no federal regulation here as to labor laws... 95% employer's are Mormon and are given power to do as they please. Salt Lake City has changed in that respect, there is more acceptance with diversity, religion and salary wages are higher then St. George. Also, professional women have a better chance working in a professional field and compensated with a higher income.
The Mormon's are moving out of Salt Lake and relocating to St. George. You'll will find Salt ...Expand for more
Lake has become a more diverse city with bars, night clubs, strip clubs, gay clubs, pubs, and more single families. Salt Lake is a very busy city facing high crime, but yet still with very beautiful surroundings.
However, on the brighter side, there are places here in St. George to visit such as Zion National Park and Bryce Canyon. I only live 45 minutes from there. Since St. George has been growing more and more everyday, we have a lot more new resturants and up scale hotels. The local mall is going through a major milllion dollar renovation project at this time. The mall will look something like Victoria Gardens (in Rancho Cucamonga). It will be a real nice place to shop including a Barnes and Noble! We do have a Starbucks!!!
In the meantime, there are name brand outlets, new movie theaters, world known spa & resorts and the fine arts. The Mormon people are very nice and down to earth but you need to watch your back. They really like to stick with their own and not visit your home or mingle with non-mormon's. However, that's not true for all Mormon's cuz I have met and made new friends and although they are Mormon, their religion does not interfere with our friendship.
The only one thing I don't understand about the Mormon religion....why do they more then one wife? Divorce is extremely high as well within their religion. Mormon's remarry several times at least more then 5 marriages!!!! Why get married again for God sakes!
Now, we plan to move again and decided to relocate to North Carolina. We just got back from visiting and looking at the real estate market and let me tell you that it is another beautiful place to live. Raleigh and Durham is not a big city like Los Angeles, but it's a perfect balance. The job market is strong and much more opporunity for moving up and making a better salary. The beach, mountains, lakes, the historical city is unbelievable. Can't wait for this new adventure....here I go again. Love to travel! Can you tell?
